NCLD Opposes the Trump Administration’s Latest Attempt to Dismantle the Department of Education

Washington, D.C. —November 18, 2025— The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) condemns the latest effort to move programs that support students to agencies with no expertise in public education. For 50 years, Congress has indicated the need for a critical federal role in public education. Prior to this role, states segregated students of color and students with disabilities, and routinely provided unequal education opportunities for students impacted by poverty.

The U.S. Department of Education has overseen federal education laws that have fundamentally changed the lives of millions of students. Congress enacted these laws to improve educational opportunities for all students, and specifically indicated that the programs authorized under this law must be implemented by the U.S. Department of Education. Today’s announcement from the Trump Administration directly contradicts federal law and disregards the public’s will.

NCLD opposes this directive. It will harm students with disabilities, their families, and their educators. We’ll continue to speak out about this and make every effort to stop it.
