Congratulations Marino Jeantet School – P.S. 19Q Winner of NCLD’s 2015 Rozelle Founders Award

On Wednesday, December 16, 2015, P.S. 19Q, the Marino Jeantet School in Queens was honored with the prestigious Rozelle Founders Award. The award, named for NCLD’s founders, is presented to an outstanding public school that has demonstrated a commitment to providing effective instruction and support to all students and is successful in addressing the educational and social-emotional needs of students with learning and attention issues. Students, school leaders, teachers, parents, alumni and other community members joined together for a special ceremony in the P.S. 19Q auditorium. The award was accepted by Principal Genie Calibar. She expressed her gratitude to NCLD, “Thank you so much for this honor. About P.S. 19Q

P.S. 19Q, the Marino Jeantet School, is a K-5 elementary school with 2,000 students, 80% of whom are English learners and 20% receive some special education services. New York City’s Department of Education has reported remarkable results for students with learning disabilities at P.S. 19Q, and nominated the school for this year’s award. Despite its large size, the school has done a great job to implement programs to support students with learning and attention issues, including the Wilson Reading program and Hochman Basic Writing Skills program. All students have benefited from the creation of smaller “academies” within the larger school. These academies foster community and allow for more personalized learning to take place. P.S. 19Q is also committed to community outreach and engagement. It is impressive to see how students take what they learn in the classroom and use those skills to “pay it forward” in the surrounding community. Overall, P.S. 19Q embodies NCLD’s mission to improve the lives of the 1 in 5 Americans who struggle with learning and attention issues each and every day.

Resource Shared with the P.S. 19Q Community

All teachers and parents received information about Understood.org and how to find support for kids with learning and attention issues. Teachers were given access to a webinar created for P.S. 19Q personnel on how to utilize Understood.org. Understood is a comprehensive free online resource to support parents of kids with learning and attention issues and empower them to help their children thrive in school and in life. Understood was created through a partnership among 15 non-profit partners and is managed by NCLD, with monthly visitors that just broke the 1 million mark. Through Your Child’s Eyes It’s one thing to read about learning and attention issues. It’s another thing to see them “through your child’s eyes.” The P.S. 19Q community will be able to experience firsthand how frustrating it is when your hand won’t write what your brain is telling it to, or how hard it is to complete a simple task when you have trouble fighting off distractions. This suite of unique simulations and videos are an ideal way to better understand the world of a child who struggles with learning and attention issues.
