On Wednesday, April 22, the National Center for Learning Disabilities celebrated its 32nd Anniversary Benefit Reception at the Union League Club in New York City. More than $1.1 million was raised in support of NCLD's programs and services.

This event was the kick-off to NCLD's new public engagement campaign, Our Kids Count! in an effort to raise over 20 million dollars over the next three years and to increase the organization's number of active advocates to 2.6 million, one for every child who has a learning disability.

This year's honoree was The Honorable Thomas H. Kean, who received NCLD's first-ever "Public Service Award." Governor Kean was recognized for his commitment to children, education and to ensuring equality.

"We are pleased to honor such a distinguished spokesperson and champion at this year's benefit reception," said James H. Wendorf, executive director of NCLD. "Both in his personal and professional life, the Governor has dedicated himself to ensuring that all individuals with learning disabilities succeed in school and in life."

The Pete & Carrie Rozelle Award, named in honor of NCLD's founders, was awarded to P.S. 48, Police Officer Michael J. Buczek School. This award is given to a school that addresses the educational, social and emotional needs of all children, including those with learning disabilities. The $5,000 award allows for expanded programmatic and staff development opportunities that focus on incorporating effective research-based practices into classroom and school-wide practice.

And two worthy high school seniors with a diagnosed learning disability were awarded the Anne Ford and Allegra Ford Scholarships. The $10,000 scholarships go to two exemplary students who plan to attend a four-year college. The winners of this year's scholarships were Macy Olivas and Zeke Nierenberg, both from California. Congratulations Macy and Zeke!

This year's benefit leadership included Frederic Poses, Chairman of the Board and Nancy Poses, Benefit Committee Chair. The Master of Ceremonies and Auctioneer was Hugh Hildesley, Vice President of Sotheby's.
