Internship Opportunities

NCLD offers internship opportunities to high school and college students throughout the calendar year. Internship applications are welcome at any time, and candidates are carefully selected based on personal recommendations, the skills they bring, their level of interest and commitment to NCLD’s mission, and when possible, a face-to-face interview.

Public Policy Intern


 

Internship Description

The public policy internship program at NCLD allows bachelor and graduate-level students to interact with DC policymakers and members of the NCLD staff on a variety of tasks. Interns’ roles and responsibilities include:

  • Attend meetings and participate on conference calls with the public policy team to gain exposure to the legislative process.
  • Attend meetings and hearings of the House and Senate committees who have jurisdiction over education legislation.
  • Set-up meetings and interface with Congressional offices.
  • Write brief memos, blog posts, and articles for the NCLD website on special education issues.
  • Conduct web maintenance, outreach, and marketing using social media (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, blogging).
  • Participate in webinars that are related to NCLD’s policy agenda.
  • Conduct legislative research. 
  • Research, analyze, and synthesize issues related to students with learning disabilities. Topics may include: charter schools, vouchers, high school dropout rates, transition planning at graduation, literacy, ESEA waivers, election, bullying and virtual learning.
  • Communicate with and outreach to constituents, parent leaders and partner organizations.

The Regina Cooper Internship - For Individuals With LD and/or ADHD

Regina Cooper InternshipThe Regina Cooper Internship is an opportunity for college students or recent graduates with learning disabilities (LD) and/or Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) to work with members of the NCLD team on a variety of projects across different program areas within the organization. The purpose of this internship is to provide opportunities for interns to contribute meaningfully to the work of NCLD, while honing interests and developing skills that will be helpful for career development and for successful transition to higher education or the workplace.

The Mission and Vision The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD) is a fast-paced, forward-thinking organization that is rapidly growing. We work to improve the lives of all people with learning difficulties and disabilities by empowering parents, enabling young adults, transforming schools, and creating policy and advocacy impact. We envision a society in which every individual possesses the academic, social and emotional skills needed to succeed in school, at work and in life. Over the next three years, NCLD will generate policy and advocacy impact by:

  • Educating policymakers, federal agencies, the White House and others on education, career/workforce, social and emotional learning and other issues affecting children and adults with LD
  • Leading knowledge-building initiatives to drive the policy debate and to build consensus around best practices to improve policy and practice
  • Creating campaigns and conducting parent advocacy trainings and conferences
  • Targeting selected states and districts to generate and support grassroots initiatives that will positively impact local and state policy
